E03 - Superfund to Super Fun: Creating a Destination Community on a Brownfield Site

The 2008 master plan for a new “urban village” at the southern end of Puget Sound called for senior housing as an essential element of a vibrant, walkable mixed-use community. The resulting GenCare Lifestyle project, now nearing completion, provides a continuum of housing, care, and services for older adults wishing to enjoy a healthy yet urban lifestyle in this spectacular waterfront location. This presentation will explore how this independent, assisted, and memory-care community was developed on a former EPA Superfund site, and how its planning and operating philosophy will offer residents whole-person wellness both within and beyond its walls.
