E09 - Designing a Learning Laboratory to Empower People with Mild Cognitive Impairment
An estimated 10 percent of people over the age of 70 have a condition known as Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). MCI reduces individuals’ ability to accomplish instrumental activities of daily living and shrinks their life space, but with the right support they can remain independent. This session will discuss how design, technology, and programs can empower individuals who are diagnosed with MCI. Within the context of the personal caregiver interaction, the patient’s home, and the patient’s community, presenters will illustrate the challenges to providing independence and social support that will help them stay a vital part of the community.
