E34 - The Impact of Multi-sensory Environments on Behavior for Veterans with Dementia
Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) significantly impact quality of life for people with dementia. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has provided multisensory environments (MSE) as BPSD therapy since 2010, and there is a critical need for investigation of MSE during times of personal care assistance where most BPSD occur. This presentation shares findings from a national 20-week clinical trial that investigated the impact of multisensory environments on behavior during assisted showering. The overall goal seeks to calm veterans with dementia through a human-centered, multisensory designed environment, customized to the sensory preferences of the veteran. The long-term goal is to partner with the VA to improve the design of MSE in dementia care facilities.
