This case study will present the process of defining and designing a new senior center in Charleston, S.C., that defied the ageism stereotype, engaged the community, and translated the users’ wishes into the final design of a 16,000-square-foot facility. Attendees will learn how the building translates into design the six dimensions of wellness and how the center serves as a community engagement hub that empowers the aging population. The senior center concept celebrates vitality, while helping revitalize a seniors’ place in society. Just as the historical character of Charleston speaks to every visitor, the history, the stories, and the active voice of our aging population is also vital.
