E47 - PDX Commons: Senior Cohousing as a Case Study Combatting Social Isolation

As an antidote to social isolation, senior cohousing provides an alternative for community members who are seeking greater sustainability, community, and purposeful living. While cohousing in the U.S. has typically been created in rural and suburban settings, urban projects are gaining traction as people are realizing the benefits to reducing their environmental footprint, looking for walkable communities with shared resources, and building social capital within a greater neighborhood. This presentation provides a case study of PDX Commons, an innovative urban cohousing project in Portland, Ore., that was formed by members through intentional actions to create community and increase their happiness.
